Wealth and power have been two commonly intertwined themes through various fictional stories throughout time such as the Game of Thrones. An example of this is when Khal Drogo killed Viserys in Game of Thrones by pouring gold over his head, representing the wealth and power Viserys wanted while killing him in the process. Comparisons of real-life executions can be made such as when a Spanish governor responsible for heavily taxing native tribes had molten gold spilled down this throat to kill him. Today, greed can cause death and destruction in ways not seen in history before.
Climate change
Since the right of climate change activism, it’s been a common topic on how corporations are affecting the environment. Examples of this come from Amazon running their Amazon Prime service. Through Amazon Prime, customers can get 1 or 2-day shipping which causes more planes and cars to be on the road to ensure that packages are delivered at the correct time. Along with affecting our atmosphere through carbon emissions, companies are responsible for being part of destroying the Amazon rainforest in ways that could bring permanent damage to our society as a whole. It’s always important that you understand how the greed of business leaders can affect anyone in the world to be slowly affected by the chain reaction of climate change.
Blame
Consumers everywhere often have to choose between purchasing products that could be better for the environment versus another product that could be more reliable and cheaper. Putting this blame on consumers has led to conversations everywhere on if we should be taxing consumers more who make this decision or instead to go after the corporations that force consumers who might not have the resources to make the right decision in the long-run. As climate change slowly affects the environment, the blame on consumers will only get more toxic.
Power for a better world
The nature of capitalism will always cause business leaders to fight to accrue more wealth and market share, no matter what the condition. This had led politicians to ponder and debate on laws in which businesses could be rewarded for making the right choice for the environment like building electric vehicles. It’s important though that politicians consider creating permanent guidelines that ensure that corporations are always incentivized to work for the benefit of the public. Examples of this include the United Kingdom’s plan to outlaw the sale of all gasoline and diesel-powered cars just 15 years from now along with ensuring that gasoline is completely outlawed from sale in 20 years. Creating these types of laws will ensure that businesses fight for an early market share of electric vehicles by creating cheaper cars with better battery efficiency. Whether you’re a politician or a regular citizen that wants to fight for a good cause, consider how power can be used to create a better world for all of us.
