How To Deal With Financial Stress

Money is often the cause of anxiety and depression as well as the leading cause of marital problems. Many people are dealing with the stress of losing their homes and their livelihood, especially with the economic impact the coronavirus has caused in the past year. When you find yourself stressed out over money problems, consider the following steps that may bring you a sense of peace.

Stay calm

When our body feels threatened, our fight or flight response kicks in. This brings physical changes to the body, such as a quicker heart rate and the release of cortisol, the hormone responsible for stress. Your body then receives a small burst of energy that causes you to want to either run away or stay where you are and fight.

This may have worked for the caveman but today you can’t always run from your problems. And if your body stays in this state for longer periods of time than it should, you could damage your health.

Stress and your health

It’s very important to know what to do to calm down in a variety of situations so that you will think clearly and stay as healthy as possible. Once you are able to relax and consider your options, you can begin to work on a solution to the problem. Consider the following tips if you find yourself stressed out over finances.

Control your breathing- You can use breathing exercises anywhere and anytime. No one will even realize you are doing it! As you focus on calming your breathing down your tense emotions will start to disappear.

Keep a diary- Keeping a diary of your thoughts and emotions can help when you are stressed out over finances. It allows you to get the thoughts and fears out of your head so you aren’t continuously stressing over the problem. End your journaling sessions by brainstorming a few solutions to your financial woes. This will give you more control over your situation, and you’ll come out of it with a more positive attitude.

PMR- For a fast-acting stress reliever, consider progressive muscle relaxation. Start from the top of your body and methodically relax your muscles all the way down to your toes. You can do this anywhere, and it will help relax your body’s stress response quickly.

Changing the situation

If you are still struggling with financial issues, changing how you think about the situation can help. For example, you may feel as though you are a failure, but it is important to remind yourself that everyone goes through tough times. Remember that working through your financial problems demonstrates just how strong you really are. If it’s your family you are worried about, remind yourself how you can all grow stronger facing challenges together. Look towards the future as much as possible.

Redirecting your thoughts to more positive ones can help reduce the stress that is caused by monetary problems. It’s easier to make better financial choices when you aren’t under high levels of stress.
